Welcome to the final countdown for Mapping. We saw some good beginnings in class last week and I'm looking forward to seeing the finished works!
This week we begin the Designer/Artist Book project. Remember, you should be thinking about an artist or designer (architect, industrial designer, graphic designer, etc. ) you would like to have as the subject of your project. You may make your selection from any designer or artist whose work is currently on view at the Walker or in the MIA Design Department. For a head start on ideas about artist books, bookbinding, etc., take a look at my Artist Book Guide I've uploaded to your OAD Google Doc list. I will be adding to my delicious.com site (address on your syllabus and in the Artist Book Guide) as I come across new resources for you, so you may want to bookmark this site and check it often. Just type in artist books, bookbinding or CVAOAD in the tags and see what you get. Or be creative, as someone must have tagged what you're looking for...
In the meantime, here are a few sites to get you going. Since I've been under the weather the last few days (no more bobbing for apples...) I thought Brian Dettmer's Book Autopsies might be appropriate. On the lighter side, Bea Nettles is a photographer and book artist who has published many examples of her student works. Why don't you start with her Book of Fun and Games and go from there. And although we'll be visiting the MN Center for Book Arts next week, you may want to check out their current exhibition NONE OF THE ABOVE: Assembling, Collaborating and Publishing in the Eternal Network and make a trip over before it closes on Nov. 8.
p.s. Good luck on this week's photo. Not sure I even remember where I took this....
